WHAT SETS THIS BARBECUE CHICKEN APART?
The best way to enjoy barbecue chicken indoors is by baking it perfectly in the oven. Our recipe provides a foolproof method to achieve a juicy chicken, combining the rich taste of homemade BBQ sauce with the savory depth of spices. It's not just about the barbecue sauce; it's how the chicken pieces, or whole chicken, are prepared and cooked that sets this BBQ chicken breast recipe apart. We find that baking a whole chicken is less work, as well as a better value. The leftovers can be utilized in many different and delicious ways.
MARY'S TWO CENTS
This recipe is categorized under "Frugal" on our rating scale. Using simple ingredients like chicken legs, black pepper, and your favorite BBQ sauce balances cost without compromising on flavor, making it an excellent choice for a family dinner without breaking the bank.
So many factors come into play when pricing a whole chicken. Is it air-chilled, pasture-raised, organically fed, heritage, young vs old? All these factors cause the price to vary enough to move this recipe from the frugal category on my rating scale to splurge. It will be delicious either way. The one caveat I always have for buying chicken is that it is air-chilled. I also look for a smaller bird, which is often the most tender.

KEY INGREDIENTS
- Key ingredients that make this dish stand out include a large, fresh whole chicken, a mix of dark meat and skinless chicken breasts, and a favorite BBQ sauce that adds that signature barbecue flavor.
- The spice mix, featuring garlic powder and smoked paprika, infuses the chicken cook with aromatic depth.
- Unsalted butter enhances the moisture, guaranteeing a baked BBQ chicken recipe that's truly remarkable.
SWAP IT OUT!
For a healthier twist, olive oil can replace butter. If you're out of BBQ sauce, a mix of Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, hot sauce, and tomato paste can serve as a homemade BBQ sauce. Skinless chicken breasts can be used as a leaner option, adjusting the cooking time accordingly.

FAQ'S for Easy Oven Baked Whole BBQ Chicken Recipe
Yes, you can adapt this recipe to use other cuts of chicken, such as skinless chicken breasts, BBQ chicken thighs, or skin-on chicken thighs. The cooking time will vary depending on the cut. The cooking time might be shorter for chicken breasts, so keep an eye on the internal temperature to avoid overcooking. Chicken thighs may require a slightly adjusted cooking time compared to a whole chicken but will result in a deliciously juicy chicken dish. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
This BBQ chicken goes wonderfully with a variety of side dishes. Classic options include coleslaw, baked beans, and corn on the cob for a traditional barbecue feel. Consider a fresh green salad, roasted vegetables, or mashed potatoes for a lighter option. For those looking to keep it simple, a side of rice or a BBQ chicken quesadilla can beautifully complement the barbecue chicken flavors.
Add extra hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to spice up your BBQ sauce. For a unique twist, try incorporating Worcestershire sauce, a bit of brown sugar for sweetness, or even a splash of bourbon for depth. If you're making a homemade BBQ sauce, experimenting with Sweet Baby Ray sauces or mixing in fruit preserves can add an interesting flavor to your easy, baked BBQ chicken.
