CAN YOU COOK SALMON IN THE AIR FRYER?
It's important to note that personal preference plays a significant role in determining what cooking method you find most enjoyable. I prefer cooking salmon using the air fryer because It cooks fast and leaves no oil or smoke in the air. Some people may prefer cooking techniques such as baking, grilling, or pan-searing for their salmon. Experimenting with different methods can help you find the one that suits your taste preferences best.
Here are a few reasons why I think air-frying is the best way to cook salmon.
Less Prep!
All you need to do to prep the fish is rinse the fillets under cold water, pat dry with a paper towel, apply any rub you like, and spray or brush with oil. TIP: Choose the easy way and use a silicone, parchment liner, or non-stick aluminum foil on the bottom of the fryer basket. Salmon skin is notorious for sticking.
The salmon has a crispy texture
The air fryer uses rapid air circulation to create a crispy exterior on the salmon without excessive oil. This gives the fish a satisfying crunch while retaining its inner tenderness. To achieve this, you will need to apply some type of oil on the surface of the fish before cooking.
The filet is cooked evenly in the air fryer
The hot air circulating around the salmon ensures even cooking throughout, resulting in a perfect salmon. It helps to avoid undercooking or overcooking certain areas, which can sometimes happen with other cooking methods. Salmon fillets are the perfect choice for the air fryer. Salmon fillets and steaks are often similar in size, making them perfect for the air fryer. If you have a piece that has a thin section just fold it under or not, letting it get extra crispy (my favorite part).
Air frying retains the moisture of the fish
The air fryer's quick cooking process helps to seal in the moisture and natural flavors of the salmon, preventing it from becoming dry. This results in a moist texture while enhancing the overall taste of the fish.
Air frying is a healthier option
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for the nervous system, heart, and brain health. Fish, especially oily fish such as salmon, are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. I am always looking for low carb, heart-healthy cooking options. Air frying requires significantly less oil compared to traditional frying methods. By using just a minimal amount of oil or even cooking without any oil, you can reduce the salmon's overall calorie and fat content while still achieving a desirable texture and taste.

MARY'S TWO CENTS
This recipe falls into the FRUGAL category. Frozen salmon can usually be found in the grocery store at a very reasonable price. I bumped this dish up from CHEAP because sometimes fresh salmon is the only thing available, and it is costlier than frozen. The spices are ones that you probably keep on hand. You could serve the salmon with my Collard Greens to keep the cost down and enjoy a delicious meal.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Mix all the spices in a separate bowl.
Brush pieces of salmon with olive oil.
Sprinkle salmon with garlic.
Sprinkle each piece of fish with spices.
Cook in air fryer @ 400 F for 11 minutes.
Remove from the air fryer and serve.
Recipe FAQ'S
To reheat your salmon in an air fryer, set your fryer to 360 degrees F. Place the salmon skin-side down in the basket. Line the basket with parchment paper or foil to prevent the salmon from sticking. Cook for five minutes. The salmon should be heated through and ready to eat.
Yes, you can cook frozen salmon in the air fryer. If you use frozen, you don't have to defrost it before putting it in the air fryer, but it's best to let it defrost a little to get a better texture at the end. It cooks a little more evenly if thawed even slightly.
The USDA recommends cooking fish to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (62.8 degrees C) on a meat thermometer placed into the thickest part of the salmon.
EQUIPMENT
- Air fryer - I use a Power XL mini air fryer.
FOOD STORAGE TIPS
Salmon should be consumed the day it is cooked if properly refrigerated and the following day as well. Leftover air fryer salmon is safe to eat the next day stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container and properly reheated. Cooked salmon does not do well in the freezer. Making salmon patties is a great option for using leftover salmon.
EXPERT TIPS
For this easy recipe, I like to place aluminum foil down in the basket or on the tray of the air fryer, then give it a little spray with some non-stick cooking spray. Salmon skin (if using skin-on fillets) really likes to stick, so the foil will make clean-up easier.
